Looking into the history and size of the city of Katowice, I found out that the area is 164.7km squared and the population is 317,316 (2018). Compared to the capital city, Warsaw, it has around 700,000 less people but being a figure in the 100,000s makes the city fairly big. It is the 10th biggest city in Poland. This is my first time living in a city and I am abroad so it all seems larger to me. Comparing the city to London, it does feel more spread out, there is more open space and there is a real mix of architecture from traditional to modern.

Katowice is the capital city within the Silesia Province in the historical region of Upper Silesia and is located in South Poland. The city is in the centre of the Upper Silesian Industrial Region and is the home of the main institutions of central and local government as well as the 'most important cultural and educational institutions'. The Silesia Province used to be the most industrialised region in Poland and it is now turning into a business and cultural centre on a gradual basis. There are art and entertainment facilities, large shopping centres and public utility buildings arising in the post-industrial areas. The post-industrial nature of these buildings is still expressed in the form of characteristic elements within the Silesian community to the historical traditions of the region.
Information obtained from 'Information for Foreign Partners ASP Katowice' leaflet.
"The changing image of Katowice over the recent years is clearly illustrated by the fact of the city applying for the title of European Capital of Culture 2016".
