Drawing and Painting Classes

On Friday (16th February) we went to uni to have a chat with Agnieszka about the different units we can choose and to try and find out more about the drawing and painting classes offered alongside interdisciplinary actions as part of the Graphic Art study programme.

Agnieszka gave us some information about room numbers that were not listed next to classes on the timetable and went through some of the units we think we may choose, giving us the number of credits. We have to complete 30 ECTS credits in total and she only wants us to do a maximum of 5 classes because she doesn't want us to take on too much considering that we will only be studying here for one semester. Many of the second year units have a small number of credits so this is proving to be a little tricky but we are sure we can work it out soon enough.

She could be flexible and combine some units together in some way so that there would be a higher number of credits. This was true for both Drawing/Interdisciplinary Actions and Painting/Interdisciplinary Actions. Each of these would be worth 9 credits, bringing the total so far up to 18 credits. Another unit we are interested in is Graphic Art: Literature Interpretation which is worth 2 credits, I think this would be well suited to our Illustration course back home because we have undertaken projects before that involve interpreting text in order to create an illustration. The Graphic Art Basics unit is print-making, we definitely want to make use of the amazing print-making facilities here, print is a big part of Polish art and design culture. This unit is worth 3 credits. We are also looking at doing the Digital Graphics Basics unit and an extra drawing and painting unit that would total 30 ECTS credits. This could possibly mean that we would end up doing 6 units rather than the maximum 5 but we can crossover projects within the units so the workload may not be as large as it seems. We have 2 weeks left to decide for certain.

Later on in the morning, we went to speak to the Dean in charge of the drawing and painting studios alongside his two assistants. They began by asking if we could show them some examples of our work, we will bring in online portfolios next week as we didn't have our laptops with us at the time. They like to look at the level you are working at and see which mediums suit your style of work best. They value the use of different tools to create work. Within the studio, there are 3 problem sheets stuck onto the wall for the summer semester. These are 3 different projects, they put emphasis on the skill of problem-solving. This is a skill we are used to using as part of our Illustrative practice at home.

We can choose one of these topics or discuss our own ideas with tutors. This feels more relaxed than Farnham because we tend to be given a brief that we can interpret in our own way to some extent but we do normally have to follow some specific guidelines. There are separate projects for each discipline - drawing, painting and interdisciplinary actions. You can choose 2 topics depending on the scale of the workload you are producing. Another difference here is that the studio can be used all week, we each signed a sheet that gave us permission to do this. At UCA, the studio is open everyday but it can't be used when other classes are in there. At ASP, the classes seem to be smaller and students don't tend to spend the whole day in the studio, they seem to come and go as they please.

Another aspect of the drawing and painting (interdisciplinary actions) that excites me is an exhibition that is being set up with the other students on this course in April. We are missing our exhibition unit at our home university so it would be great to be able to participate in one here. Our work would definitely reach a wider audience as well because we are abroad. This also includes taking part in a second core project with another university. Collaboration is key within art and design.

The complexity of the projects we create depends on our ability and availability. We also have opportunities to use the metal workshop, computers for video editing and take part in a classical drawing workshop involving life study.

The most important aspects of the drawing, painting and interdisciplinary actions units are research, drawing, concept art, co-operation between studios and the use of cross-over techniques in a flexible way. I'm sure these units would suit us well because although they are quite free, we could incorporate our skills and knowledge of Illustration so far into projects as well as building on techniques and use of tools.

I look forward to beginning the first project for interdisciplinary actions - simulacra (an image or representation of someone or something). I could create a documentary of Katowice, drawing what I have observed and learnt about the city so far from the point of view of someone who does not live here permanently and who has never been to Poland before.
